Members of this family are involved in biosynthesis of the molybdenum cofactor (Moco) an essential cofactor of a diverse group of redox enzymes. Moco contains a tricyclic pyranopterin termed molybdopterin (MPT) that contains the cis-dithiolene group responsible for molybdenum ligation. This dithiolene group is generated by MPT synthase the second major step in Moco biosynthesis. MPT synthase consists of a large (MoeE) and small (MoaD) subunit. The small subunit is inserted into the lare subunit to form the active site. The small subunit which is structurally similar to ubiquitin contains a C-terminal thiocarboxylated glycine residue that serves as a sulfur donor for the synthesis of the MPT dithiolene group.
